Abstract
A survey was made of fungi found in the rhizosphere, the rhizoplane, and macerated root tissue of the Gros Michel banana in a 60-year-old planting in Honduras. Fifty-one species of fungi, representing 37 genera, were isolated, among them three taxa, Pseudoarachniotus reticulatus, Preussia terricola, and Absidia cylindrospora var. rhizomorpha, described elsewhere as new. Verticillium theobromae, a known pathogen on aerial parts of banana, was isolated from both rhizosphere soil and the rhizoplane. Aspergillus versicolor, Nodulisporium sp., Periconia sp., and Scopulariopsis brevicaulis were isolated from root tissue, but were not found in either the rhizosphere or rhizoplane. Cylindrocarpon sp., Fusarium episphaeria, and Rhinocladiella sp. were found in both the rhizoplane and macerated root tissue, but were not found in rhizosphere soil. Memnoniella echinata, Myrothecium sp., Pyrenocheate sp., and Torula sp. were isolated only from the rhizoplane. Keywords
