Abstract
Neutron inelastic scattering measurements are reported for a gaseous sample of methylfluoroform and are shown to agree reasonably well with theoretical predictions for a spherical top molecule. The measurements have also permitted the first direct observation of the torsional mode of vibration in this molecule. The best estimate of the torsional frequency is 220 ± 15 cm-1 corresponding to a barrier height of 13·3 ± 1·0 kj mol-1.Keywords
