Abstract
A brief period of increased creatine excretion, followed by an increased creatinuria and then by a return to control values, was observed when rats were placed on a low protein diet. A diet deficient in labile methyl groups produced no diminution in the excretion of urinary creatine. Presumably available methionine was preferentially used for growth and creatine formation. The increased creatine excretion, probably associated with wt. loss, indicated a waste rather than a conservation of needed methyl groups.
