Traumatic Situations in Obesity

Abstract
Thirty-three case histories of extremely obese patients (38–161% overweight) were reviewed in respect to meaningful biographical events coinciding with the onset of obesity. All patients had psychoanalytically oriented interviews. No specific intrapsychic conflict could be discovered as being etiologically connected with the onset of obesity. Overeating was used as a defence mechanism against the unconscious affects of helplessness and hopelessness arising mainly in situations of object loss.
