Enterotoxin Synthesis by Clinical Isolates of Staphylococci

Abstract
Staphylococci isolated from a variety of clinical specimens were tested for their ability to produce enterotoxin and also to determine whether a correlation exists between enterotoxin production, the enterotoxin type and the clinical site of isolation. Enterotoxins were typed by a gel double-diffusion test in which culture supematants were tested with known reference type-specific antibodies. Of 157 staphylococcal isolates, 36 (23%) were found to produce enterotoxin, a lower frequency of occurrence than has been previously reported in studies involving fewer numbers of isolates. A significant relationship between the enterotoxin type and the source of the clinical specimens was not found.
