Abstract
In brief: Anterior knee pain (chondromalacia patellae) may be the most troublesome, ubiquitous overuse syndrome in the sports world. Complaints of insidious onset of vague, activity-related pain coupled with evidence of wasting of the vastus medialis muscle usually establish the diagnosis. The two major goals of treatment-alleviating the symptoms and strengthening the vastus medialis-can often be attained with minimal intrusion into the patient's athletic endeavors. Treatment may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, icing, and physical therapy modalities (eg, high-intensity galvanic stimulation, ultrasound). However, the key to successful management of the problem is active involvement of the patient in the rehabilitation exercise program. Keywords
