THE MINIMAL NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF LACTOBACILLUS BIFIDUS

Abstract
Four strains of L. bifidus, isolated from the stools of breast-fed infants, were found to grow on a simplified medium comprised of lactose, buffers, minerals, NH4 salts, cysteine, biotin and Ca pantothenate. The cysteine (cystine) requirement was not replaceable by methionine, homocysteine, or related compounds. The pantothenic acid activity of pantethine for these strains was approx. equal to that of Ca pantothenate.Keywords
