Abstract
IR and Raman orientational correlation functions are obtained from the corresponding profiles of the ν3 band of N2O at near‐identical experimental conditions. The influence of the leak of polarized light is estimated for Raman scattering. The experimental correlation functions corrected for hot bands, are compared to the usual theoretical rotational diffusion models. None of the models fits both the IR and Raman correlation functions. A very good agreement is observed with the Steele perturbation theory, which introduces as the only parameter the mean square torque exerted on the molecule by the medium. Keywords
