Abstract
The nature of the electronic phenomena involved in the adsorption of alkali atoms on a metallic substrate is discussed. The metal-adsorbate system is treated in terms of a simple model which makes possible a self-consistent calculation of the effective charge on the adsorbed atom. The atom is treated in the Slater approximation and the metal is assumed to be free-electron-like. Numerical results are presented for K, Rb, and Cs adsorbed on W in the presence of various electric fields. Keywords
