Abstract
This paper examines societal trends and their implications for physical education in higher education. Change is viewed not as a gradual linear process leading inevitably to progress but as a process of periodic major transformations. Proposals are made for the transformation of physical education into an integrated field that practices emancipatory education. Keywords
