Cultures of Streptococcus pyogenes From the Oropharynx

Abstract
Specimens from seven oropharyngeal sites in each of 20 patients infected with Streptococcus pyogenes were inoculated on sheep blood agar without antibiotics and on sheep blood agar with sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Colonies of the pathogen growing on each medium were quantitated and results compared. The study demonstrated that cultures from posterior oropharyngeal sites (ie, tonsils, posterior pharynx, and posterior tongue) yield higher colony counts of S pyogenes, regardless of the medium used, than do cultures taken from oropharyngeal areas anterior to these sites. The sheep blood agar with antibiotics grew S pyogenes more frequently, and with higher counts, than did the sheep blood agar without antibiotics.
