Abstract
The range of resolutions and frequencies at which background polarization studies are now available makes it possible for the first time to investigate the frequency-dependent behaviour of both the percentage and angle of polarization over a large area. This confirms that a considerable random magnetic field component exists, along with a system of magnetic fields showing large scale order. The high latitude distribution of polarized radiation is associated with the Galactic Loops, the polarization characteristics of which may be qualitatively explained by a shell source model. The field system described above is regarded as being perturbed by these relatively local features. Keywords
