Discrete oscillation modes and damped stationary density waves in one-dimensional collisionless systems

Abstract
We have determined accurate radio positions for 40 pulsars using the VLA. 19 of these pulsars were observed at three epochs, 1984.98, 1986.39, and 1989.08, from which proper motions have been obtained with an accuracy between than 0.01 arcsec per year for the stronger pulsars. Absolute positions have a precisions of a few tenths of an arcsecond or better and, after correcting for known proper motions, are in excellent agreement with positions derived from pulsar timing onservations. The weighted mean offset between the VLA and timing frames is only 0.02 arcsec. Proper motions have also been determined for 21 pulsars from a comparison of the VLA positions with previously published positions. Where independent determinations of proper motions are available, they generally agree within twice the estimated errors but there are few notable exceptions. Pulsar transverse velocities derived from new proper motion determinations are, on average, somewhat higher than those found previously, but lie within the previously observed range.
