Abstract
Six cases of surgically treated funnel chest deformity are reported. Results in all cases were excellent, and there were no serious complications, residuals, nor mortality. The period of observation covers two to four years, and there is no indication that recurrence is likely. In one case of the series, scoliosis was remarkably improved coincidentally with correction of the funnel chest deformity. The substernal ligament has not seemed an important factor in these cases. Etiology has been discussed as it may alter the type of surgery required in various cases. The extreme hazard of tension pneumothorax and the mechanism of its production peculiar to these cases are pointed out. The means of avoiding this complication is tight closure of the skin, which will prevent air being pulled into the mediastinum during respiration. Keywords
