Abstract
A system of suppressor for the segregation distorter (SD) action was analyzed in a natural population of D. melanogaster. Most of the suppressors were located on the X chromosome. Two kinds of 2nd chromosomes were found in the same population, 1 was a chromosome carrying an insensitive element to the SD action and the other a chromosome inhibiting the effect of suppressor. The effect of the suppressor varied for the SD of different populations The suppressor was located between the v and f loci on the X chromosome. The suppressor-X chromosomes showed slight but consistent meiotic drive; in relation to this effect, a genetic mechanism regulating sex ratio in the population was discussed.
