STUDIES ON VIGOR

Abstract
A comparative study of the absolute strength and fatigability of the gastrocnemius muscles of normal and ovariectomized rats. Voluntary activity of ovariectomized rats in revolving cages showed a decrease of 82% from that of controls. Ovariectomized animals gained weight more readily than their controls and the weights of the individual muscles were greater in the spayed animals. Absolute strength per gm. of muscle averaged 40% greater for controls than for ex-perimentals. The proportion of gastrocnemius weight to total body weight averaged the same in each group. Total work performed by ovariectomized animals was only 33.6% of that done by controls.
