Do we need physician assistants in the UK?

Abstract
The concept of the physician assistant (PA) arose in North America in the 1960s as a response to the shortage of physicians in rural areas. The first PA training of three ex-military corpsmen was initiated by Dr Eugene Stead of Duke University in 1965, following a collaborative project with the nursing faculty on the training of nurse practitioners.
