Palliative care in West Germany

Abstract
Palliative care is just starting to develop in West Germany. Its evolution is beset by problems which are partly inherent in the structure of financing in West German health services, and partly due to imperceptions of the role of hospices and of palliative care by the public and other health care professionals. Three models of hospice care are described, and possible paths for the development of palliative care are suggested.
