Abstract
The electronic energy levels of a molecular crystal are classified according to representations of the space group of the crystal. When the ground state of the free molecule is totally symmetric, the number of crystal levels active in the absorption of light can be determined by a simple rule. Applications to rare earth crystal spectra and to the crystalline benzene spectrum are discussed. Keywords
