How—and why—to request an autopsy

Abstract
Preview For most clinicians, the morgue is a repellent place, representing death, ghoulishness, and failure. How can we approach autopsy with enthusiasm? How can we make an autopsy request without distressing the family further? Drs Schneiderman and Gruhn argue persuasively for the enduring value of autopsy and suggest ways to make the request without stumbling into the traditional pitfalls of paternalism and deceit.
