Abstract
Seitz filters are capable of adsorbing prothrombin from plasma and serum only if the latter have been sufficiently decalcified or their ionic Ca concn. has been sufficiently depressed. If plasma or serum containing Ca is filtered, part of the prothrombin activity will be found in the filtrate. After adsorption of prothrombin by Seitz filters, the protein may be partially recovered by passage of a soln. of Ca through the filter pad. These findings emphasize that there is (a) a close relationship between Ca and prothrombin and (b) probably a competition for the prothrombin molecule between Ca and active adsorbing groups of the Seitz filter. Since Seitz filters vary to some extent in their composition, some variability of the results might be expected. Keywords
