Manganese Requirements and Deficiency Symptoms of Some Fungi

Abstract
Relatively high requirements for Mn were demonstrated using a basal synthetic glucose-asparagine medium, which received no treatment for removal of traces of Mn. Fungi showing high requirements for normal growth included 17 spp. of Chaetomium Hypoxyjon punctulatum. and Gonatobotrys simplex. Neocosmospora vasinfecta showed a higher Mn requirement for production of perithecla than for vegetative growth. Several other fungi grew well on the basal medium without added Mn. Microscopic symptoms of severe Mn deficiency were inhibition of extension of hyphae, increased branching, and formation of swollen globose to irregularly shaped cells.
