Abstract
A demand for an inexpensive, rugged force sensor of qualitative accuracy led to the development of the Force Sensing Resistor (FSR). This device, based on polymer thick film technology, externally resembles a membrane switch, but has a resistance that varies continuously with applied force. It is thin (0.010",typ.), dynamic, insensitive to vibration or normal environmental stresses, and holds up under long-term usage. FSR technology is quickly being integrated into many applications, notably machine control, computer input devices, and composite manufacture.
