Abstract
Asia is rapidly being recognised as a key trading partner for the European Union, but there are wider issues on which these two powerful entities need to cooper‐ate and understand each, other. With trade and investment now mutually interdependent, Europe must learn to pay full attention to its Asian neighbours if it is to avoid both economic decline and political, marginalisation. In a wide‐ranging article, Sir Leon Brittan highlights areas of common interest and suggests points for common action, especially a strong shared commitment to multilateralism. Drawing on the Commission's proposals for a new Asia strategy based on equality, dialogue and mutual support, Sir Leon stresses the need for active follow‐up to the Summit between Asian and European Leaders set for next spring, not just at government level, but also by business communities on both sides. He concludes that Europe and Asia matter too much to their mutual futures not to actively, pool resources to ensure their common goals of prosperity and security are achieved.
