Abstract
The genus Mutilus is represented by two polymorphic species in the Mio-Pliocene of Zemmours : M. retiformis (Terquem) and M. venetiensis Uliczny. These populations are very dependent to environmental variations during the paleogeographic evolution of the region. Their structures are in relation with the variations of the energy of the environment and the thickness of the water layer. The geographic distribution of populations of Mutilus outside the Zemmours area, in the north-west Morocco, shows the extension and the more or less important development of the phytal zones in the landscape. The structural stade characterized, in the middle Pliocene, by a maximum polymorphism in the two species is the best chronologic marker. Keywords
