Abstract
In previous photochemical experiments of adsorbed molecules the reaction products have been observed in the gas phase by mass spectrometric analysis. In this paper a spectrometer is described which allows direct spectroscopic identification of the products at the surface. The optical performance of the spectrometer is tested by recording the spectra of NO2 and HCHO on LiF. In the surface photo-reaction CO + CH4+hν on a nickel film formaldehyde is observed as a reaction product. The absorption spectrum of HCHO on Ni is displaced to lower by Δ= 770 cm–1 compared with that in the gas phase. Keywords
