Urticarial Sensitivity to Cold in the Tropics

Abstract
Idiopathic acquired urticarial hypersensitivity to cold is a problem occasionally encountered in dermatologic practice. Its incidence is difficult to determine, but it probably is infrequent, although Urbach1 and Witherspoon2 believe it to be a common occurrence. A review of the literature reveals that reports of patients with cold urticaria have been from areas where the weather is intemperately cold at least for a few months of the year. The purpose of this report is to document the occurrence of idiopathic acquired urticarial hypersensitivity to cold in an inner tropical zone and to review briefly a few of the clinical features. In the past 6 months I have observed 2 patients with this form of cold sensitivity in Panama City, Panama. Both patients were seen in my private practice.
