CYLINDROMA

Abstract
A diagnosis of cylindroma should conform to rigid histologic criteria. A similar epithelial pattern in a myxoid or chondroid stroma is presumably a variant of mixed tumors of the salivary gland. Many of these tumors will have a clinically malignant course. True cylindromas show temporary response to intensive irradiation. Although the only curative treatment appears to be surgical, preoperative irradiation may be beneficial in decreasing the incidence of local postoperative recurrence. Irradiation, whether preoperative or palliative, should be carried to the maximal dose tolerated by surrounding normal structures.
