Abstract
A novel CRT (cathode ray tube) based on cold electron emission by field effect from a matrix array of 'microtips' and on low-voltage cathodoluminescence is described. The 'microtips' display associates the main performances of the CRT with those of flat panels. Specifically, the feasibility of monochrome and full color microtips displays which associate the main performances of the CRT (speed, viewing angle, brightness, contrast, and temperature range) with a flat, ultrathin, lightweight matrix addressed structure has been demonstrated. The proposed display is potentially suitable for any flat panel application. Keywords
