Of 975 patients with thyroiditis, 92 percent were women and most were middle-aged. Those with acute and subacute thyroiditis responded to drugs, but in 680 patients operations were necessary to establish a diagnosis or relieve local symptoms. Biopsies disclosed chronic nonspecific thyroiditis in most instances.
