Turbulent Jets in a Confined Crossflow

Abstract
An experimental and analytical study of the deflection and impingement of turbulent jets in a confined crossflow, a geometry which occurs in gas turbine blade impingement cooling schemes, is presented. The range of jet and crossflow Reynolds numbers investigated is directly applicable to turbine blade configuratons. A simple one-dimensional analysis using the basic conservation equations is developed to predict jet trajectory, average jet properties, and impingement point for spatially variable crossflow velocity profiles. The simplicity of the one-dimensional analysis makes it more suited to design calculations than two-dimensional jet analyses. Other crossflow velocity profiles are studied and jet development is successfully predicted by the analysis for all cases.
