Abstract
The author describes a novel interleaving strategy, called the helical block (HB) interleaver, and discusses its efficient hardware implementation. The advantages of HB interleavers as compared with traditional interleavers, including block interleavers, convolutional interleavers, and helical interleavers, are discussed. A relationship between helical interleavers and convolutional interleavers is presented. The new interleaving strategy eliminates the interleaving depth restriction, while still maintaining a good deinterleaving synchronization.
