The Response of Dairy Calves to Aureomycin Fed with a Liberal Milk and Grain Ration

Abstract
Sixty-three Holstein and Jersey calves were divided into 2 equal groups which were fed 15% solids reconstituted milk at 15 to 20% of body weight for 30 days and then gradually weaned to a ration of concentrate and hay. One group received Aureomycin at the rate of 60 to 300 mg/day, according to their consumption of milk and concentrate feed. The supplemented calves gained faster than the controls both during the milk feeding period and after weaning. The average differences in 4-month weight gains of 21.2 lb. for Holsteins and 12.7 lb. for Jerseys were not significant statistically, because of the wide variability within groups. The growth-promoting response was not consistent in these experiments.
