Abstract
Methods used to measure Palinurus vulgaris are discussed and it is suggested that carapace length be measured from the tip of the rostrum to the posterior edge of the carapace, and total length from the supra-orbital spines to the end of the telson. Calipers and measuring boards for measurements of Palinurus are described. For 315 female and 194 male Palinurus measured in Cornwall the regressions of total length (T) on carapace length (C) were calculated as:— T = 2·40 C + 72·2 for females and T = 2·11 C + 88·1 for males over the size range of carapace length 99 mm to 161 mm for females and 91 mm to 182 mm for males.
