Abstract
Although traditional social work methods can be beneficial in the schools, these same methods often cause frustration among educators and show little or no evidence that they are helping to change inappropriate behavior in schoolchildren. Reinforcement therapy cannot be considered a panacea, but its preventive-restorative value is vastly underestimated. This article reports on attempts by a school district in Illinois to apply certain techniques of learning theory, including the use of social and tangible reinforcers, a token-economy system point-exchange system, and a chart system.
