Abstract
Threshold values for axial and lateral "stress" on teeth of adolescents were studied. "Stress" is that point beyond touch at which "load" is first perceived by the subject; these sensory reactions being subject to great individual variation. Morelli''s gnathodyna-mometer was used to measure axial stress, and a spring balance to measure lateral stress. The subjects included 55 individuals of both sexes ranging from 11-19 yrs. of age. An increase of threshold values was observed from anterior to posterior teeth. Axial values were not found to be proportional to root surface area as might be supposed. Lateral stress perception would seem to be localized at the gingival margin, axial stress perceived over the entire periodontium. Keywords
