Abstract
Cultures in Locke''s egg-rice medium of E. histolytica growing with Streptococcus hemolyticus were inoculated with penicillin-resistant bacteria and treated with penicillin to remove the original flora. In this way the protozoan was established in culture with Klebsiella pneumoniae Eberthella typhosa. and Salmonella paratyphi A and S. paratyphi B. With Pseudomonas aeruginosa. the amebae died; and with Shigella dysenteriae. Salmonella enteritidis, and Proteus vulgaris the streptococcus persisted in the cultures. A tabulation is given of all spp. of bacteria reported to be capable singly of supporting growth of E. histolytica in various media, in cultures originated from cysts or trophozoites of the ameba. Keywords
