Revealing Quintessence
Abstract
Distance measurements to Type 1a supernovae (SNe1a) indicate that the Universe is accelerating and that two-thirds of the critical energy density exists in a component with negative pressure. If that component is an evolving scalar field (`quintessence'), accurate (5% or so) distance measurements to SNe1a can be used to reconstruct the scalar-field potential. We derive the reconstruction equations and demonstrate the feasibility of this approach by Monte-Carlo simulation. Keywords
