Abstract
This is the first in an occasional series of papers on Australian marine science establishments. An island continent with almost 37,000 kilometres of coastline, Australia looks to the sea for transport, defence, food and recreation. When the 200-nautical mile Australian Fishing Zone was declared in 1979, the nation also accepted responsibility for the manage-ment of 7 million square kilometres of surrounding ocean, an area only slightly smaller than the continent itself With such a responsibility came an obligation to study the Australian marine environment in greater detail. The Australian Government responded by substantially increasing its invest- ment in marine science. New laborat- ories were established in Hobart for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and an oceanographic vessel was built for the use of all Australian marine scientists. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
