Tobacco Foliage Loss to Horn worms and Budworms in North Carolina, 1957 and 1958

Abstract
Fields were sampled by examining 85 plants (1/80 A. of flue-cured, 1/106 A. of burley) after injury by the first and second broods of hornworms. The number of fields examined per county was outlined in a stratified sampling plan. Foliage losses were recorded by quarter-leaf increments. Growers lost $3.25/A. of flue-cured tobacco aftd 01.13/A. of burley tobacco to hornworms (Protoparce sexta (Johan.) and P. quinquemaculata (Haw.)) in 1958. Average losses caused by budworms (Heliothis virescens (F.) and H. zea (Boddie)) were 02.14/A. of flue-cured and 03.02/A. of burley tobacco. Total average losses caused by both worms was 05.49/A. of flue-cured and 03.69/A. of burley tobacco.
