THE ANATOMY OF THE YEAST MITOCHONDRION REVEALED BY ELECTRON-MICROSCOPY OF VITALLY-STAINED SQUASH PREPARATIONS

Abstract
Squashes of yeast cells in distilled water yielded intact mitochondria which were identified by staining with Janus green. Electron micrographs of squashed yeast cells grown in an iodine-containing medium showed that iodine increased the visibility of the internal structure of mitochondria. The interior of a mitochondrion comprises rows of villi emanating from a central core. The outer and cristal membranes enclose the internal structure.
