Abstract
The social factors that lead to the development of learned helplessness in elderly persons in the health care setting are examined in this paper. They include stereotyping the elderly by health care professionals, the effects of unequal interpersonal exchange, and the behaviors associated with sick and healer roles. These factors combine to lead to independence of response outcome and inappropriate attention to the needs of the elderly. Programatic and educational prophylaxis and solutions to this problem are also discussed. Keywords
