C-banding at meiosis as a means of assessing chromosome affinities in the Triticeae

Abstract
The meiotic chromosome pairing of 1 Chinese Spring wheat [Triticum aestivum] aneuhaploid (3AL) and 2 Chinese Spring aneuploid .times. rye [Secale cereale cv. Petkus Spring] hybrids (N3A-T3B and N5B-T5D .times. rye) were studied. These genotypes all display higher than normal levels of pairing which were analyzed with the aid of the technique of C-banding. The results show that the pattern of pairing is neither random nor of an unrestricted homoeologous nature. Pairing is more frequent between unbanded (A and D genome) chromosomes, than between either unbanded (A or D genome) and banded (B or R genome) chromosomes, or between banded (B and R genome) chromosomes.
