Abstract
Following the introduction of artificial diets, a generation of women with phenylketonuria (PKU) has matured and some of these women have reproduced. Offspring of these PKU mothers without PKU have multiple stigmata at birth, including mental retardation. To avoid harmful effects to the fetus, these mothers can be treated successfully by a low phenylalanine diet. This report of a case of the birth of a bright unaffected child includes specific diets for pre-pregnancy trial and maintenance during pregnancy.
