Abstract
Histochemical analysis indicates that rat and human conjunctival goblet cells contain a sialo-mucin which is susceptible to sialidase digestion. Electron microscopic studies demonstrate some ultrastructural differences between the secretory granules of rat and human goblet cells. The superficial epithelial cells in rat and human conjunctiva contain small (0.2–0.7 µm) membrane-bound granules which stain positively with colloidal iron and do not stain for acid phosphatase. It is suggested that the superficial epithelial cells of the conjunctiva contribute to mucous production in the eye. Keywords
