Abstract
Middle infrared reflectivities have been measured for five silicate minerals. Kramers–Kronig analysis and Mie theory have been used to calculate absorption cross-sections for small particles of the minerals. The results of these calculations are compared with the astronomical ‘ silicate ’ feature as observed against W3/IRS5. It is proposed that small particles of a hydrated silicate are responsible for the astronomical 10-μ. feature.
