Abstract
Retinal horizontal cells responded linearly to weak monochromatic lights. Their spectral responses were analyzed in the linear range. Mutually orthogonal relations were found among the three different types of spectral response curves. According to communication theory, the interactions between cones and horizontal cells are interpreted as an orthogonalizing process which provides the optimal coding for the transmission of color information to the central nervous system.
