Intestinal Granulomatosis in Chronic Granulomatous Disease and in Crohn's Disease

To the Editor: Gastrointestinal involvement in children with chronic granulomatous disease was recently reviewed by Araent and Ochs,1 with a specific note made of the presence of pigmented histiocytes in proximal small-bowel mucosal biopsies and the frequent occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms. However, none of the nine patients described had granulomas found on small-bowel biopsy.We recently treated a 2 1/2-year-old boy with chronic granulomatous disease diagnosed by the nitroblue tetrazolium dye test of Baehner and Nathan2 who had symptoms of appendicitis and in whom diffuse bowel granulomas developed after operation.At operation, the patient was found to have an . . .
