Abstract
The study has reviewed existing analytical models for the prediction of the steady-state transverse bed profile in channel bends, formulated an alternative model, and compared their predictive capability by laboratory and field data. The alternative model, which is based on a theory for the critical conditions for sediment entrainment, gives good agreement between measured and predicted bed slopes. The study shows that the key parameter in all available models is grain size. The prediction of the complete bed topography of a given bend for a given flow data requires knowledge of the spatial variation of the grain size.
