Abstract
Progress report on an exptl. program designed to study the effectiveness of auditory training for profoundly deaf pupils in order to show to what extent the small remnant of hearing in these children may be trained and employed when the very best of acoustical equipment is available. Present study consists of a group of 8 profoundly deaf compared with 12 control cases. Such children are definitely benefited by the use of hearing aids, which are capable of amplifying sound well above their thresholds, in speech perception, general educational achievement and to a lesser degree speech intelligibility. High powered equipment in a relatively nonreverberant room, capable of presenting undistorted speech signals at levels near the threshold of pain and with a power limiting devide that protects the ear from discomfort or acoustic trauma is necessary.
